Never in the history of television and film has there been this much content at our fingertips to choose from.
Technology has brought Hollywood’s product to every corner of the world with unprecedented scale and speed, currently streaming to over 190 countries and counting. With this awe-inspiring scope, we face a moment of reckoning for our industry. How does the entertainment we create influence the psychological and social health of our global community? Are we able to look unflinchingly at the media we make and how it influences the world? Can we engage in dialogue with the leading social scientists whose research is shedding new light on these questions? And can we align our creative and business decisions with these insights while always maintaining complete autonomy and integrity as artists and business professionals?
Our industry was born of the desire to entertain. Our careers thrive through our ability to accurately define what our audiences want. To prosper, we’ve focused on what is most commercially viable – out of necessity. Now there is also a necessity to acknowledge that our roles come with a responsibility to be aware of how our art can shape our global human society. We are not here to thematically pass judgement on content, but to stand tall and view our massive influence with a greater sense of awareness and responsibility.
